Hollywood is adapting all sorts of things for new TV series, including TV series. Twin Peaks, The X-Files, 24, Heroes might just be the tip of the iceberg. Which other TV series should get considered for a return to the small screen? Episode one: The A-Team.
Why a reboot?
The A-Team was a fun action cartoon, with iconic characters, great stunts, flipping cars and goofiness. Nowadays there’s no show like it.
Has it been tried before?
Yes. Twice. There’s the 2010 movie of course, but according to Dirk Benedict (Faceman), networks have tried to get a modernised A-Team off the ground with an all female cast. It never saw the light of day.
What would have to change?
The original Team was sent to prison in 1972 and consisted of Vietnam war veterans. They could change to soldiers who served in Iraq or Afghanistan, but it might be more interesting to do something different. Like turn the A-Team into an actual elite team, like Seals, that’s done covert missions all over the world. At the root of the overall story is a conspiracy within the military. A fictitious secret mission would be a great source for that.
What definitely shouldn’t change?
The black GMC van.
Who should play the leading roles?
John ‘Hannibal’ Smith: Eric Roberts. He’s got the charm, charisma, grin and authority.
Templeton ‘Face’ Peck: Timothy Olyphant. Even without the beard and cowboy hat he can talk his way into and out of anything.
Bosco ‘B.A.’ Baracus: Michael Clarke Duncan would’ve been perfect, but another human rock who would do Mr. T justice is Dwayne Johnson.
H.M. Murdock: Josh Robert Thompson. A great improviser, does a lot of celebrity voices, known for his hilarious role as Geoff Peterson on the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson.
Amy Amanda Allen: Mädchen Amick. The journalist who doesn’t take no for an answer should be smart, tough and beautiful. Amick’s all that and more.
Col. Roderick Decker: They could also go with Col. Lynch, but Decker’s the more interesting (and less goofy) of the two. I’d love to see Mandy Patinkin (Saul Berenson on Homeland) take a crack at it.
What about cameos?
Dirk Benedict, Dwight Schultz and Mr. T could play family members and sort of reprise their original roles as Vietnam veterans.
How would the pilot go?
Start at the beginning: the prison break from a ‘maximum security stockade’ and the chase by the military police.
How about the theme song?
The leader should definitely mimic the original one and the theme song should be updated. A new version of it, played by Sons of Anarchy house band The Forest Rangers would be very cool.
NBC wasn’t too happy with the show at the time, despite the high ratings. The reboot would be better suited for CBS or Fox.
